Where is the Youth Camp?

The first Youth Camp is in the park “Vinicio Adames”
south of Caracas. When the park is full, another one, “Parque Los Caobos” close
to Parque Central will be opened.

How do I get to
 the Poliedro?

A free transportation service is offered to go to the
Youth Camp and the Poliedro. The buses leave from the BP gas station in the back of Parque Central (Avenida Lecuna). They first go to the Poliedro, where the accreditation can be realized, and from there to the Youth Camp.

Another possibility to get there is go to the Metro
station "El Valle" and take a bus from there to the Poliedro.

Monday on also in US Dollars or Euros).

In this moment, the Vinivio Adames parque still needs work before being ready for the reception of people arriving to participate in the Youth Camp. We are faced with a chaotic reality, and lack of materials and preparation. The four hectares land sanctioned for the camp don’t have even the minimal structure necessary to habitate many people, yet the first youth participants are arriving.

Until now, only signs for meeting points and division posts for the 9m2 tent spaces have been placed. The terrain has been fumigated – with all of the environmental effects that carries – so as to avoid the danger of animal bites. As well, the land has been drained, so as to impede floods in the case of major rain. All of this was directed by the project and logistics coordinator for the camp, María Esther Cabrera (Ingeniera), the local Firefighters and the Health department, who have assured that the ‘control’ and security posts have been installed.

Lacking still are the installations of bathrooms, showers, potable water tanks, and the stalls for the cooperatives that will be providing food. Sofar, transportation is not available to the camp. This is all due to breaks in communication between the work commission of the Youth Camp and the authorities who are supporting the Camp with the necessary resources. The Coordinators have said that requirements were sent, but never arrived at their destinations, motivations for this are still unkown.

Participants for the Vinicio Adames park have already arrived, and set up camp in the space, despite the deficiencies. The main problems are food provisions, potable water, transport and hygene. In sum, the park isn’t ready to be occupied yet. We are hoping that in the next few days things will move ahead, and we’re working to make that happen, with the goal of having all basic installations in place for Saturday, ready to receive 5 thousand tents that will first occupy this park, and then, once full, be located in the other zone, Los Coabos park (one which, at this point, has absolutely no camp infrastructure).

This is a really critical situation, and the support and voluntary collaboration of every individual is fundamental in making the World Youth Camp possible this year. Its important to emphasize that their wont be much in the way of camp commodities, and each must use their imagination to resolve whatever problems arise – putting in action the concept of self determination that will guarunte the quality of the convergence.

Not Here! Not Anywhere!

The big secret; the thing that doesn’t get talked about. It happens everywhere in the world, even at solidarity camps.

Sexual assault is non-consensual sexual touching, kissing, violence, harassment and rape. Unfortunately, sexual assault is a constant in all of our societies. As we are people who believe in transforming the world, it is essential that we confront sexual assault and the culture and forces that build it; so that we can free the world of sexual assault! In this camp, we will be sharing our cultures, our stories, our lives, and our dreams. For us to flourish as a community, we must make this space safe for all. When any of us feel threatened, because of gender, race, class, country of origin, and sexual orientation, we are unable to build a future based in the principles that have brought us together here at this youth camp. We must act as the community that we wish to be, and challenge Sexual Assault, so that we are all safe to dream and build together. (...)

At past Campamentos, even at the prior Soilidarity camps in Quito, Ecuador, and Porto Allegre, Brasil, sexual assaults took place. We refuse to stand back and do nothing; we challenge the participants of this social forum to live the other world that we know is possible, and to build a campamento free of sexual violence.

Sexual Assault includes all non-consensual sexual behavior, and is therefore inherently coercive. Although sexual assault can take place between people of the same sex , and men can be assaulted by women; in the vast majority of occurrences, men sexually assault women. Sexual assault is an abuse of power, and is a part of a culture that condones violence against women.

Every person has different limits of what makes them feel safe or not, and some of this is based in cultural difference. Since we come from different cultures, we must communicate clearly, make no assumptions, and respect our differences and limits.

Ultimately, everyone wants to feel safe, even if our limits are different. We are an international community, we have the opportunity and responsibility to be consciously sensitive about others experiences throughout the Forum. For this reason, it is always best to ask before engaging in sexual behavior and keep this dialogue and awareness present throughout the week.

Another Forum is possible, one in which sexual assault does not take place, where women are respected, and where we all feel safe to celebrate and share.

Let us build this other world, it takes all of us!

By el colectivo adelita, an international network, family, of antiimperialist feminists. We welcome everyone! adelita@riseup.net

There are more thean 300 volunteer interpreters that will collaborate for the fluid communication and exchange of ideas between participants. Regarding Visas, despite the different difficulties that have appeared, the commission has been able to resolve matters with contingencies and will continue working to ensure an effective process for entering the Youth Camp.

Reception teams have been formed and will be available at the Simón Bolívar International Airport to help participants get to the Arturo Michelena International Airport in Valencia and finally Caracas. The plan for volunteer transport buses to and from the Camp has also been set.

The Venezuelan government has set a special plan that includes:

In any case:

c) If it is needed the Charallave airport located at 1 hour of Caracas will be habilitated for land transport.

Mercado, General Coordinator of the Youth Camp, the decision also has political motives, a problem that the Forum has been facing since the beginning of its effort.

The last hope to get the Parque del Este stands in a positive answer of the Governator Diosdado Cabello, in a letter that must be handed on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:date month="1" day="5" year="2006">Thursday January 5th 2006</st1:date> in the morning.

Mercado added that if the autorization are not granted this week, the Parque de los Caobos will begin to be occupied with tents on Monday January 9th of 2006. However, he underlines that the instalations of Los Caobos show several logistical, sanitary and infrastructural problems, among others.

The common stand of all the volunteers of the World Youth Camp is that the event will happen between January 23rd and 29th of 2006. All the necessary efforts will be made to reach this objective.

GT Comunicación campamentomundial@gmail.com

It costs 400 Bs, with option of 350 Bs for ride of less than 8 stations and 300 Bs for less than 4 stations. The Metro operates from 5 am to 11 pm. The people registered at the World Social Forum will get a pass for the Metro for the time of the event. They will have to pay their own rides for the time before their registration.

The Transportation Commission of the World Camp presents the Roads of the Forum. Details concerning the roads and costs will be available on this blog when they are known.

The Maiquietía Simón Bolivar airport and the Bus Terminals La Bandera and El Oriente will have welcoming brigades that will offer information about the World Camp to the people arriving. These brigades will divide the incoming persons in different buses, cabs and motorbike-cabs accreditated and to the exclusive use for the World Social Forum at the expense of the different users. The particular bus terminals* existing in the city will also have welcoming teams but without the exclusive transportation. In this case, the normal public transportation will be offered.

* Terminals: Peliexpres, Expreso Occidente, Aero Ejecutivo, Expreso Mérida and Lago Express.

Social Roads

The goal is to show the social initiatives that are currently happening in Venezuela: Barrio Adentro, Mercal, Casas de Alimentación and Education Missions, among others. Tours will be available between January 23rd and 30th of 2006. Fees will be at the expense of the individual users. There will be a translation service.

Socio-Turistic Roads

These are the roads going to other cities and states in Venezuela. They are available for people interested in knowing the diversity of ecosystems and social projects out of the Greater Caracas Area.
